As a crucial segment in the LED industry chain, LED packaging has made significant progress with the rapid development of the LED industry in recent years. From early-stage technical exploration and market expansion to the coexistence of various packaging technologies and the surge of packaging companies, the LED packaging industry has undergone tremendous changes. Hangzhou Multi-Color Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Multi-Color Optoelectronics”) is a prime example of a company that has achieved success in the LED packaging field. With strong research and development capabilities and innovation, Multi-Color has earned the trust and reputation of its customers. In an exclusive interview with Wu Guoqing, Product Director of Multi-Color Optoelectronics, LED Display World delves into how the company continually enhances its core competitiveness in the fierce market competition.

Crafting Quality with Precision: Building a Strong Brand

Multi-Color Optoelectronics’ products have gained market favor due to their high quality and broad application areas. Wu Guoqing explains: “Multi-Color’s products include through-hole LEDs, mainly 346 models, used in outdoor advertisements and stadiums. These products use unique processes and adhesive formulations, offering significant advantages over domestic competitors in terms of aging resistance and long-term reliability, comparable to Nichia. For outdoor TOP-type products, such as 1921 and 2772 models, they are mainly used in large-pitch outdoor displays and exhibit remarkable aging resistance. Our indoor TOP-type models, including 1212, 1515, and 2121, are primarily applied in high-end rental, cinema, and XR virtual filming environments. We use special adhesive formulations and precise dispensing technology to enhance black-screen contrast, display brightness, and consistency at wide viewing angles. Additionally, our indoor CHIP-type LEDs, such as the 1010 and four-in-one models, are tailored for high-end rental and fixed installations, especially our recent flip-chip 1010 products, which have achieved excellent sealing reliability and surface consistency.”

Wu further elaborates that Multi-Color Optoelectronics is committed to developing products that meet the specific needs of niche markets, collaborating with clients who want to create distinctive products. The company also focuses on improving cost-efficiency in standard products to increase their value for a wider range of customers. After nearly five years of research, the company’s flip-chip and COB products are nearing maturity, and they plan to increase investment and expand their customer base to improve their market share.

Innovating to Improve Quality: Driven by Technological Advancements

Multi-Color Optoelectronics began researching COB and MIP products five years ago, developing their own designs and processes for soldering, reflow curves, chip bonding, and encapsulation. The company’s unique bottom-fill blackening process ensures high contrast on black screens while maintaining display brightness. Their specialized soldering and bonding processes enhance chip flatness, improving consistency across various viewing angles and eliminating visible defects.

Wu Guoqing points out that flip-chip products (including four-in-one models) with sizes of 1010 and above will occupy an important position in high-end display applications. However, the current market is dominated by smaller-sized flip-chip products (0606 and below) or MIP, which are transitional solutions for manufacturers unable to meet market demand with traditional flip-chip COB. This approach, which still involves the conventional LED chip-on-board process, is expected to be replaced once the performance of COB displays improves.

In addition, Multi-Color Optoelectronics adopts a unique collaborative business model for COB, where they only handle packaging and related processes, while the client designs the LED boards and solutions. This allows both the company and the client to maximize their strengths without competing with the original display manufacturers, creating a win-win partnership.

Wu emphasizes that, unlike many domestic LED manufacturers engaged in price wars, Multi-Color focuses on addressing customer pain points, improving the added value of their products, and ensuring high product quality. They aim to avoid excessive price competition and instead focus on developing cost-effective solutions that enhance product competitiveness.

Expanding Market Reach: A Strategic Vision for Future Growth

Founded with the goal of producing products that rival international high-end brands like Nichia, Multi-Color Optoelectronics has seen significant success in international markets. Wu explains, “Overseas markets are more profitable than domestic markets, and customers there place high demands on long-term reliability, often requiring warranties of five years. Multi-Color has focused on improving product quality to meet these demands while highlighting the cost-effectiveness and unique features of our products.”

In recent years, with increased competition in the LED industry and a market oversupply, Multi-Color continues to focus on refining their flip-chip and COB products. Wu predicts that COB will remain a hot product, and as the display quality, cost, and material processes improve, the shipment of COB products will continue to grow, becoming more stable and effective.
