Domestic Innovation on the Rise: New Opportunities for China’s Display Driver IC Industry
As China’s independent R&D capabilities continue to advance, the adoption rate of domestic display driver ICs within the LED display industry has exceeded 90%. “Our growth has been a process of continuous technological innovation,” said Chen Riyu. “Throughout this process, we’ve introduced many new technologies and actively built our intellectual property portfolio in areas such as communications, display algorithms, and low power consumption, securing over 30 invention patents.”
“For example, in the area of display data transmission, we creatively proposed a combined approach to grayscale bit storage and transmission, balancing display performance and chip cost. In recent years, Shixin Technology has also contributed to the industry with our RGB three-in-one technology. At the same time, in the integrated light-driver market, our chips offer significant advantages in high contrast, low grayscale, and high refresh rate performance, and we’ve achieved a series of innovations in this field.”
Chen also noted that under the influence of AI large models, the irregular-shaped display industry will be impacted in ways that accelerate product design and assist with computational tasks. AI can also help validate algorithm design and reduce iteration cycles. For example, algorithms for contrast and sharpness can enhance display performance by automatically identifying the subject and background within an image. These algorithms enable the display driver chip to dynamically improve image contrast, enriching colors and making visuals more vivid and vibrant.
Chen concluded by stating that in the future, driver ICs will develop toward low power consumption and high performance, driving progress in display technology. There are two main paths to low power consumption:
One is reducing static operating current to lower standby power usage, which is especially suitable for long-running display devices and helps reduce operating costs and promote environmental sustainability.
The other is achieving low-voltage operation by optimizing circuit design and semiconductor processes to lower the system’s power supply requirements, reducing energy consumption, shrinking the size of the power module, and improving integration.
As for high performance, this mainly includes two aspects:
One is higher grayscale bit depth, which increases the number of brightness levels, resulting in richer color gradation, smoother image transitions, and enhanced contrast—meeting the demands of high-end commercial displays and film production.
The other is low grayscale with high refresh rate, which addresses flickering and ghosting issues in low grayscale conditions. This ensures optimal performance in scenarios such as sports broadcasting and virtual reality, while also maintaining the display quality required for film production and advertising shoots.
